1. Himbaza Initiative – Children’s Worship & Inclusion: The Himbaza Initiative empowers East African refugee churches to include children ages 5–12 in worship and prayer through culturally relevant, play-based activities like Bible storytelling, music, choir, and drama. The program also equips parents, pastors, and volunteers to support children's spiritual and educational development. Himbaza aims to close generational and cultural gaps and promote literacy and engagement within refugee congregations.
2. Gosheni Initiative – Healing Through Farming: Gosheni is GHMI’s trauma-informed farming program that provides mental health support, food security, and community connection to East African refugees in Louisville. Known as “the healing place,” the program integrates pesticide-free farming, cross-cultural therapy, and technical training. Participants gain personal healing, social support, and practical skills while contributing to a sustainable local food system.
3. Tabara Initiative – Girls’ Empowerment & Anti-Trafficking: Tabara (“to be rescued and restored” in Kinyarwanda) is a prevention and restoration program for East African girls and young women at risk of sexual exploitation. It offers trafficking prevention education, life skills, mentorship, and advocacy through schools and community partnerships. The program also supports survivors with case management and collaborates with law enforcement and child welfare agencies.
4. Humura Initiative – Women and Single Mothers Support Program: This program serves refugee women and single mothers impacted by domestic and sexual violence. GHMI provides holistic support including trauma counseling, interpretation services, case management, resource referrals, skills training, and peer support groups. The program also hosts community education events to promote violence prevention and legal awareness within the East African community.
