Gate of Hope Ministries International (GHMI) serves to create an environment where East African individuals, families and communities are equipped and empowered to live out a more spiritually fulfilled, socially connected, and economically stable life.

We are looking for compassionate and patient volunteers to serve as math tutors for two students eager to strengthen their math skills. This opportunity currently supports a 10th-grade high school student and a college freshman at JCTC, both seeking consistent academic encouragement and support.

By volunteering, you’ll help these students build confidence, develop stronger math skills, and see their potential for success. Whether you have prior tutoring experience or simply a love for math and helping others, your time and encouragement can make a meaningful difference!

Details:

  • Location: Epiphany United Methodist Church, 7032 Southside Dr, Louisville, KY 70214
  • Students: High school students and college freshmen
  • Subjects: Primarily math (algebra, geometry, or college-level math depending on your strengths and comfort).

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one or small group math tutoring.
  • Encourage and support students in building problem-solving skills and academic confidence.
  • Communicate regularly with Gate of Hope's Operations Manager to ensure consistent support.

Qualifications:

  • Comfortable explaining math concepts clearly.
  • Reliable and patient with a passion for helping young women succeed.
  • Previous tutoring or mentoring experience is a plus, but not required.

Commitment:

  • Minimum: 1 Saturday morning per month
  • Preferred: 2 Saturday mornings per month

Requirements

Prerequisites

  1. Completion of a background check prior to tutoring.
  2. Orientation before the first meeting.
  3. Basic knowledge of high school math.

Responsibilities

  1. Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in math for high school and college students.
  2. Help students build confidence and understanding in key math concepts.
  3. Prepare or review lesson materials as needed for each session.
  4. Communicate with the program coordinator about attendance, progress, and scheduling.
  5. Commit to serving at least once a month (preferably twice) on Saturday mornings.
  6. Encourage and motivate students through positive reinforcement.

Restrictions

  1. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. A background check is required prior to tutoring to ensure a safe environment for students.
  3. Basic proficiency in high school–level math

Preparation

  1. 1. Confirm their interest and availability.
  2. 2. Attend a brief orientation to learn about Gate of Hope, the students, program goals, and expectations.
  3. 3. Complete a background check prior to tutoring.
